Halloween Contact Lenses

It’s that time of year again. Time to dress up, get scared, look sexy, and just have fun. Oh yeah, and eat a lot of cheap chocolate. But don’t worry, I am not a dentist, so I am not here to tell you to avoid all of that sugar.Rather, I’m here to remind you to think twice before you or your children go looking for those Halloween contacts.

Every year around this time, I have a lot of people come into the store asking if they can just buy one pair of colored contacts for their costume. My response is usually disappointing. “Do you have a prescription for them?”  Yes, contacts lenses, even non-prescription colored ones, are considered medical devices and are regulated by the FDA, and for good reason!

This is a corneal ulcer, caused by a patient wearing Halloween contacts last year. The person lost her vision in that eye.

According to the FDA

They are not “one size fits all.” An eye doctor (ophthalmologist or optometrist) must measure each eye to properly fit the lenses and evaluate how your eye responds to contact lens wear. A poor  fit can cause serious eye damage, including:

  • scratches on the cornea (the clear dome of tissue over the iris—the part of the eye that gives you your eye color)
  • corneal infection (an ulcer or sore on the cornea)
  • conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • decreased vision
  • blindness

Places that sell decorative lenses without a prescription may give you few or no instructions on how to clean and care for your lenses. Failure to use the proper solution to keep contact lenses clean and moist can lead to infections, says Bernard P. Lepri, O.D., M.S., M.Ed., an FDA optometrist in the agency’s Contact Lens and Retinal Devices Branch. “Bacterial infections can be extremely rapid, result in corneal ulcers, and cause blindness—sometimes within as little as 24 hours if not diagnosed and treated promptly.”

“The problem isn’t with the decorative contacts themselves,” adds Lepri. “It’s the way people use them improperly—without a valid prescription, without the involvement of a qualified eye care professional, or without appropriate follow-up care.”

This leads us to the next question. Why can you find them at the beauty salon or convenience store? The answer is that these vendors purchase them from overseas and the product is not regulated. This is even scarier, since the lenses can come with bacteria in the lens solution and the materials are not tested for quality. If you really want to be scared this Halloween, think about eye eating amoebas! Any store selling contacts lenses without a prescription is breaking the law.

So what can you do if you want some colored contacts to enhance your costume? Speak with your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist and see if they are able to fit you in contacts. Who knows, maybe you will like them so much that you will add them to your eye care options!

RedBull Sunglasses

First, let me begin by saying I am not a RedBull drinker. I have tried it once and can’t stand the taste or that edgy feeling that remains when the taurine wears off. That being said, I love these sunglasses!

Beyond the drink, RedBull is an active lifestyle brand that combines edgy fashion with high performance materials. RedBull has taken materials used in Formula-1 racing and applied them to eyewear. The outcome is fashion, comfort, and durability.

Frame Materials include XMP, TR90, Carbon, and Stainless Steel                                             This is what makes the collection so cool!

XMP (Xtreme Matrix Polymer)- The world’s most advanced thermoplastic from Formula 1 was transferred to the eyewear collection and offers outstanding benefits such as extreme lightness and flexibility. As far as I know, RedBull is the only company out there that uses this material!

TR90- is a thermoplastic granulate made for lightness and flexibility. It is used by many luxury brands, such as Tag Heuer.

Can it get even more technical and sophisticated? With RedBull , than answer is always , why not?!

The lenses are made of a material called XNL ( xtreme nylon lenses) This is the same material that Formula 1 racing uses on their visors in their helmets. It is

  • unbreakable
  • extremely light
  • 100%UV protection
  • Superbly clear optics

And better yet, all of these lenses can be made with your prescription, with mirrored coatings, and the RedBull Racing logo monogrammed on the lenses!002

So if you enjoy technical design, sophisticated materials, and an all around bad ass look, than RedBull Sunglasses are for you. What a great gift for those active , bad ass Dads who take life by the horns!

For the month of June, See by the Sea is happy to offer 15% off of all RedBull sunglasses and eyewear. Did I mention they start at just $79?

Thanks for reading my blog and hope to see you at see-by-the-sea!

The benefits of purchasing at your local optical store.

With so many choices for glasses and eye wear in the market today, why bother with the small, privately owned, optical store in your town? After all, there are so many advertisements promoting “free exams”, “ one year warranties”, and “$39 glasses”. Why bother limiting yourself to a small store?

Besides the oft repeated benefits of buying local ,there are particular benefits of purchasing your eye wear from your local optician. The truth is, your options are severely limited at the larger stores, and all of those “special” offers are done to cover up the restrictions placed on you, the patient.

Have you ever walked into one of the larger, chain stores and been presented with either this or that? That’s because the employees are limited in the products they can offer you.

In reality, there is a huge selection of lenses and coatings. Each one performs differently and meets your eye wear needs in a different way. Would you like protection from blue light? Need specific lenses for our outdoor activity?See-by-the-Sea Optical!Your local eye wear store has the entire range of products at their disposal and can find the right product for your needs.

Have you ever been in a large chain store and been told that your current frame is unusable? Or your prescription can’t be put in that frame you fell in love with?

Chances are your local optical store can do it. I can use your old, beloved, frames. I can make those lenses a little bigger, or change the shape for you. I will customize your glasses to your desire.

That’s the powerful benefit of trusting your local optician. I provide personalized care with customized products and services. I look forward to showing you everything I have to offer at See-by-the-Sea Optical!!
