Do you use digital devices? If so, this is for you.

Of course you use a digital device, otherwise you couldn’t be reading this article right now! These devices have become so ubiquitous that we do not question what effects they can have on our vision and overall health.

Discussion in the vision care world has been on just this topic. There are numerous effects that our use of devices have on us as consumers. Firstly would be eye fatigue. If I used my biceps as heavily as my ocular muscles, I would look like the Rock!dwayne-johnson-7 We change our focus from distance, to our phone, back to the distance, to reading, to our phone, to our laptop, and back again. Every time we change what we are looking at, we use our ocular muscles. By the end of the day, those muscles are exhausted, which is why we have problems focusing more at the end of the day, or things become a bit blurrier, or we get headaches. The technical term for this is Asthenopia. These complaints become more common as we get older, just as my trips to the gym become more painful every year, and eventually develop into Presbyopia. That’s where our eye muscles start needing help and we begin to use reading glasses.

I know that sounds like all bad news, but fear not. There are many optical devices which can help with your every day eyestrain. The lens manufacturing companies are continually introducing products to assist reduce eye fatigue. For instance, a single vision lens which contains a small addition at the bottom that helps magnify your phone and tablet area, while leaving your distance unaffected. (Full disclosure, after viewing this video, apparently my gym analogy isn’t as original as I thought it was! I promise I wrote that before watching the video)

For those that don’t require distance correction but do need help up close, there are also computer lenses which assist in focusing at the intermediate, computer area, as well as the reading area. spectaclelenses_office_design_office-lens_750x262

These lenses are not an all day solution, but they are perfect for those of us who spend our entire day on the computer and at a work desk.

For an all day solution, we look towards the progressive lens. Progressives are no line, multi-focal eye wear, that assists with distance, intermediate, and reading correction. However, not all progressives are created equal and there are a plethora of options to choose from. It’s best to consult with your local optician to find the right progressive for your needs.

The fact that all of these options are at your disposal ought to convince you that you need not suffer at the end of the day. Furthermore, these options are much more practical than the current solution of extending our arms to infinity.hqdefault

On my next blog, I will discuss another issue which our digital life creates, blue light and its effects on our health.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to seeing you in the store!
